[DeLa Doll] Uzumaki – Azami Kurotani Cosplay and SFX Makeup Tutorial (Dolloween 2020)

Fun fact: When I say “I’ll be back tomorrow with a new thing!” as I did at the end of the Wednesday Addams Dolloween Post, I really mean “2 – 3 business days.” Let’s face it: Art takes time, and cosplay is art. I am sometimes guilty of underestimating the amount of time it will actually take to:

  1. Gather supplies
  2. Record a cosplay makeup tutorial
  3. Take pictures of said cosplay
  4. Edit the makeup tutorial
  5. Write a blog post and video description
  6. Publish everything

So my solution to this is to just say “soon” rather than giving specific dates because I don’t want to deal with the personal disappointment of not meeting self-imposed deadlines. But I digress; you’re not here for that. You’re here for pretty pictures, or in this case, pretty unsettling pictures. Well, I have them in abundance, having cosplayed Azami Kurotani from Junji Ito’s Uzumaki , complete with a homemade latex prosthetic. Enjoy!

The Cosplay

I hadn’t read Uzumaki in its entirety until last Saturday. I read all 20 chapters, horrified, disgusted, stressed out, and completely enthralled. As a writer and artist myself, I thought “I want to make people this deeply uncomfortable and mesmerized with my work.” What can I say? I’m a real humanitarian. Naturally, I had to express my reverence for Uzumaki with a cosplay, so I decided to recreate the iconic panel of Azami Kurotani’s face being consumed by the spiral in the chapter “The Scar.”

The Makeup Tutorial/Transformation

I created this look using body paint, liquid latex, a $3 Walmart Halloween wig, and patience. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t extremely proud of how it turned out, especially considering how this was my first time both creating and applying my own latex SFX prosthetic. I also tend to practice a makeup look a few times before recording a tutorial, but in this case, I just went for it on my first attempt.

2021 Update!

In addition to the makeup transformation video above, I also created a video tutorial explaining how I created my prosthetic uzumaki eye! Enjoy <3

Overall, I’m really happy with this cosplay, and with how I pushed myself to try something new. If you enjoyed this post, be sure to subscribe to my mailing list, and check me out on YouTube and social media.
